Teaching Language for Business Communication Certificate Program

This program is designed primarily for teachers of world languages and other professional educators with a nonbusiness background who are looking to advance their skills and gain credentials in business and teaching languages for professional uses. Participants completing the program are awarded a dual certificate in Teaching Language for Business Communication awarded by the Graduate School of Education and Wharton Programs for Working Professionals.

Courses are taught in English. Most participants are already proficient in other languages or are teachers of English as a second language.

The teaching component includes syllabus design, curriculum development, assessment, and instructional approaches; the business portion focuses on management, strategy, and marketing.

Business courses are taught by Wharton professors and industry executives appointed by the school for their subject expertise, teaching skills, and ability to offer networking opportunities to course participants. Language faculty members are experienced teachers and researchers from Penn's top-ranked Graduate School of Education.

Program Description

To receive the dual certificate, participants must complete coursework from three centers at the University of Pennsylvania:

  • The Summer Institute for Teaching a Second Language for Business Communication. This intensive, week-long program offered by the University of Pennsylvania's Center for International Business Education Research is taught by experts in language teaching and business administration using case studies and projects. Co-taught by experts in language pedagogy and business administration, it emphasizes needs analysis, curriculum design, and instructional approaches to the field of communication for business purposes. It offers ample opportunities for materials development and instructional practice. Participants can earn Act 48 credit, and those who seek continuing education credit can expand their projects through supervised study immediately following the Institute. • The Graduate School of Education. This program covers issues and approaches in language for business communication. After the Summer Institute, the program continues with supervised study and project work. Participants also complete an internship, with guidance and supervision, on needs analysis and curriculum design and implementation for a specific business context. The GSE portion of the program also requires three additional post-baccalaureate courses on language, culture, and society, as well as in teaching English as a second language. The program includes a foundation course on approaches in language for business communication and an internship course. It also offers a choice of programs in language curriculum and communication. Among the courses available are "Language and the Professions" and "Cross-Cultural Variation in Language Use."
