Financial Aid

Financial aid is not currently available, but Penn offers loan programs for which WPWP students may be eligible. Complete information is available at Penn's Student Financial Services.

Many WPWP students are funded by their employers. Because WPWP courses are post-baccalaureate rather than graduate level, tuition benefits from employers are not considered taxable income under current IRS regulations.

Some students may be eligible for a tax deduction for work-related educational expenses. Consult your tax advisor or your local Internal Revenue Service office.

University of Pennsylvania employees may be eligible for Penn's Tuition Benefit.

Information for Non-U.S. Citizens

Visas

You will need an F-1 or J-1 visa to enter the U.S. for the purpose of studying. Because WPWP curriculum is part-time, we are unable to issue F-1 or J-1 student visas. However, if you plan to be in the U.S. on an F-1 or J-1 visa issued by another educational program, such as the University of Pennsylvania's English Language Programs (ELP) — then you can enroll in our courses on a part-time basis.

WPWP has an arrangement with ELP for a joint admissions program whereby students can study half-time in the ELP's Intensive English Programs and half-time in WPWP and thus be eligible for an F-1 student visa. If you are interested in this option, please contact the WPWP at wharton-wpwp@wharton.upenn.edu.

We do not accept students with a B1/B2 visa.

If you are already in the U.S. on a valid visa type except B1/B2, F-2, or J-2, you may enroll in our courses. Your visa must be valid for the entire period during which you will be studying. We are unable to provide assistance for extending visas.

F-2 and J-2 visa holders should be aware that current Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) rules state that F-2 and J-2 visa holders may engage in part-time study only if it is "avocational or recreational in nature." Unfortunately, the BCIS does not give further definitions or guidelines for deciding how courses meet these criteria. Therefore, F-2 visa holders may enroll as non-major students only, limited to 2 courses. J-2 visa holders enrolled in the WPWP-ELP alliance program may pursue a full certificate (4–6 courses). If you have additional visa questions, we recommend consulting with an immigration attorney before enrolling.

For complete and updated information about visa requirements, you may contact the University of Pennsylvania's Office of International Programs.

Proof of English Language Proficiency

Wharton Programs for Working Professionals, including the Wharton Business and Law Certificate, offer students a learning experience that encourages public speaking, group discussions, and active class participation. To succeed, students must possess a highly developed proficiency in written and oral English.

In addition to having the appropriate visa, international students whose first language is not English must submit with their application proof of English language proficiency, demonstrated through one of the following:

  • TOEFL CBT: 240 with TSE 55 or iBT Speaking and Writing 24
  • TOEFL PBT: 585 with TSE 55 or iBT Speaking and Writing 24
  • TOEFL/iBT above 96 total with 24 in Speaking and Writing
  • TOEIC 850
  • CAE: grade B or above (or CPE: grade C or above)
  • IELTS: 7.0 or higher
  • ELP student: 800 level

Note: If your test score is more than two years old, you must retake the test. Wharton accepts only official TOEFL scores sent by the ETS.

TOEFL Waiver: You may request to waive the TOEFL if you have earned an undergraduate or master's degree in an English-speaking country or from an institution in which English is the language of instruction, or have completed a U.S. graduate degree program followed by at least three years of work in the U.S. Applicants may be required to provide evidence in support of the waiver with an iBT Speaking and/or an iBT Writing score of 24 or higher, or one of the above tests with the score level indicated. Note: If your test score is more than two years old, you may be required to retake the test. Wharton accepts only official TOEFL scores sent by the ETS.

Testing: Applicants may have the option to take the SPEAK Test (the University of Pennsylvania version of the TSE) which is offered by the University's English Language Programs office (ELP). The ELP offers on-site testing three times annually: at the end of the spring, fall, and winter semesters. Questions about registration and payment may be directed to the ELP at 215.898.8681.

International Transcripts

When submitting transcripts for application, all courses must be verified and translated into English and into N. American standards before submission by an authorized translation service, such as World Education Service (WES) or Education Evaluators International, (EES). You will be required to provide an official paper transcript sent directly from each college or university attended to WES, EES, or other authorized third-party verification agency.

Housing

We do not currently offer housing facilities for students. However, international students who combine study in our programs with classes at ELP can arrange for housing.
